communology

uService is a new pan-European development project for what software vendor Communology describes as the “super prosumer era”.

What is uService?
uService is a project sponsored by the EUREKA Cluster Program ITEA 2, a strategic pan-European program for advanced pre-competitive R&D in software for Software-intensive Systems and Services (SiS). Companies, research facilities and universities in Austria, Finland, Germany, Spain and Turkey are involved in the project.

Aim of the project with Communology?
To create a number of simple and easy micro-sites for groups. These micro-sites will provide instant social networking for consumers and business.

Examples: jogging groups, virtual DJ’s, those looking for car-pool etc.

Why?
Well the aim is that because the context of the group is vital to each microsite, Communology will design the sites according to location, data, behaviour and preferences. I presume this means a set of templates with adverts, or news etc will be available “off the shelf” for the instant micro-site community to take shape.

Advertising?
The Communology ad-serving solution will not only enable a wide variety of different forms of advertising (mobile banners, text ads, coupons, videos, etc.), it will also allow a context-based approach to precisely target individual consumers. In addition to location-based data, the context will also include information gained from the use of the service itself, voluntary information, such as preferences and interests as well as consumer profile information based on market research data about specific cell phone models.

What we think?
Now, mobile site creation is not new. Mobile micro-site creation is not new. But creating tiny sites for groups as large as two and contextualising them is.

Saying that, the first questions that springs to mind are: is it worth it? Will anyone use this? And why bother when users are already on Facebook, etc.?

But then I think of Germany, where I and Communology are based. I am a member of three “vereins” groups. The “vereins” are groups and societies such as walking, swimming, wrestling or Women and Family. The Verein culture in Germany is huge. I don’t think it exists in the UK outside of sports teams. I mean, if we want to enrol our children to swimming or use the outdoor pool etc – we need to join a Verein and pay a fee.

So anyway, what I am saying is that this idea of contextual micro-sites could work in Germany where you have to join something to be part of it. Our whole family is part of Rad Sport Verein (Cycling club) and the club is only on when it doesn’t rain. Using a mobile micro-site might be a good way of messaging or chatting to members to see if there is training or not. For example – due to the holiday season we received large letters informing us when the club would be closed. This is a waste of money and bad for the environment.
